Create Design Kit (Brand Board) in GoHighLevel

Purpose

This SOP documents the steps required to create a Design Kit (brand board) for a specific subaccount in GoHighLevel. It ensures consistent brand management by outlining a repeatable process for visual identity setup.

Note: For Symphony Core clients, we always start from an existing logo, so the first step in template selection must be "Start from blank."

Access Information

  • Brand Board Menu Link: .../location/[locationID]/marketing/brand-boards
  • Navigation Path: Marketing > Brand Boards

Visual Overview

The following steps reference the GoHighLevel UI under the "Marketing" section, as shown in the provided screenshots.

Step-by-Step Procedure

Step 1: Log in and Access Subaccount

  1. Log in to your GoHighLevel account
  2. From the main dashboard, select the appropriate subaccount from the left sidebar

Step 2: Navigate to Brand Boards

  1. In the left navigation menu, click on Marketing
  2. Under the Marketing section, select Brand Boards
  3. You will see the Brand Boards management screen with options to view existing design kits or create new ones

Step 3: Add a New Design Kit

  1. Click the blue + Add Design Kit button located on the right side of the Brand Boards screen
  2. A modal will appear titled "Choose a desired brand board style"
  3. The modal displays multiple template options including:
    • Start from blank
    • Earth
    • Lagoon
    • Elements
    • Tender
    • Desert
    • Dusk
    • Coffee

Step 4: Start From Blank

IMPORTANT: For Symphony Core clients, always select Start from blank as the brand board option.

  1. Click on the Start from blank template (first option in the top-left)
  2. The template shows placeholder sections for:
    • Logo upload area (marked "YOUR LOGO")
    • Color palette slots
    • Typography samples (Ag, Aa)
  3. Click the blue Continue → button at the bottom-right of the modal

Step 5: Populate Design Kit Elements

Follow the on-screen prompts to upload and define brand elements:

Logos Section

  1. Before uploading: First check if logos already exist in Media Storage

    • Navigate to: Media Storage > Brand Assets > logos
    • Search for existing client logos in this location
    • If logos are found, note their location for upload reference
  2. Logo 1:

    • Click Upload Logo 1 button
    • Browse to Media Storage > Brand Assets > logos (if not already there)
    • Select and upload the primary logo file
    • Supported formats: SVG, PNG, JPG (max 5MB)
  3. Logo 2:

    • Click Upload Logo 2 button
    • Upload secondary or alternate logo variation if applicable
    • Follow same Media Storage path for consistency

Best Practice: Always check Media Storage first to maintain consistency and avoid duplicate uploads.

Colors Section

  1. Click on the Colors tab (second icon in the top navigation - palette icon)

  2. The interface supports up to 10 colors with the note: "At least 2 colors are required"

  3. Click + Add to add each color

  4. For each color, you can:

    • Select the color using the color picker interface:
      • Visual gradient selector (main square area)
      • Hue slider (rainbow bar at bottom)
      • Opacity slider (if needed)
      • HEX input field for precise color codes (e.g., #2563eb)
      • Percentage and other format options
    • Name the color appropriately in the text field
      • Use descriptive, brand-appropriate names
      • Examples: "Symphony blue", "Core slate", "Symphony light"
      • Avoid generic names like "Color 1" or "Blue"
  5. Define colors based on the client's existing logo and brand identity:

    • Primary Color: Main brand color (typically from logo)
    • Secondary Color: Supporting brand color
    • Additional Colors: Accent or tertiary colors as needed
  6. Each color displays:

    • Color swatch on the left
    • Editable name field in the center
    • Delete button (trash icon) on the right

Example Color Naming:

  • "Symphony blue" instead of "Blue"
  • "Core slate" instead of "Dark gray"
  • "Symphony light" instead of "Light blue"
  • "Success accent" instead of "Green"

Typography Section

  1. Click on the Typography tab (third icon in the top navigation)
  2. The interface allows up to 5 fonts with the note: "At least 1 font is required"
  3. For Font 1, select Inter from the dropdown menu
  4. Add additional fonts as needed by clicking + Add:
    • Primary typeface for headings
    • Secondary typeface for body text
    • Additional supporting fonts (up to 5 total)
  5. Each font can be deleted using the trash icon if needed
  6. Typography preview displays:
    • Uppercase alphabet (ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ)
    • Lowercase alphabet (abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz)

Other Elements (Optional)

Add any additional brand assets according to organizational standards:

  • Brand patterns

Step 6: Save and Confirm

  • Color codes: Hex values for all brand colors
  • Typography specifications: Font names and usage guidelines

Client Information

  • Subaccount/Location ID
  • Brand guidelines or existing brand documentation

    • Email campaigns
    • Social media posts
    • Marketing materials
    • Website elements
  3. Design Kit components:
    • Logos section with 2 logo variations
    • Colors palette with primary and secondary colors

Exceptions & Troubleshooting

Unable to Upload Assets

  • Solution: Verify file size (max 5MB) and format (SVG, PNG, JPG)
  • Alternative: Re-login or clear browser cache if upload fails

Add Design Kit Button is Disabled

  • Cause: Insufficient user permissions
  • Solution: Check user role and permissions or contact GoHighLevel administrator

Changes Not Saving

  • Solution: Ensure all required fields are completed before clicking Save
  • Check: Verify internet connection stability

Logo Display Issues

  • Transparent backgrounds: Ensure PNG files have proper transparency
  • Resolution: Upload high-resolution files for best display quality
  • Format preference: SVG files provide best scalability

Best Practices

Logo Management

  • Always check Media Storage first: Navigate to Media Storage > Brand Assets > logos before uploading new logos to avoid duplicates
  • Use high-resolution files: SVG format preferred for scalability; PNG with transparency for photographic logos
  • Consistent naming: Use descriptive file names that match the logo purpose (e.g., "client-name-primary-logo.svg")

Typography Standards

  • Default first font: Use Inter as Font 1 for consistency across Symphony Core implementations
  • Font hierarchy: Establish clear primary (headings) and secondary (body) font selections
  • Limit font count: While 5 fonts are supported, typically 2-3 fonts provide better brand consistency

Color Naming Conventions

  • Use descriptive, brand-appropriate names rather than generic labels
  • Good examples: "Symphony blue", "Core slate", "Symphony light", "Success accent"
  • Avoid: "Blue 1", "Color 2", "Dark gray", "Light blue"
  • Match brand voice: Color names should reflect the client's brand personality

General Implementation

  • Maintain consistent pipeline management across all user groups
  • Use social posting features for coordinated marketing campaigns
  • Monitor reputation management dashboards regularly
  • Document all brand decisions in client delivery folders

FAQs

Q: What if my brand assets are unavailable?
A: Proceed to create a kit with placeholders and update when assets become available. Note in project documentation that assets are pending.

Q: Who can edit the Design Kit after creation?
A: Any user with appropriate permissions for that subaccount can edit the design kit. Admin-level access typically provides full editing capabilities.

Q: Can I create multiple Design Kits for one subaccount?
A: Yes, you can create multiple design kits and set one as default. This is useful for seasonal campaigns or sub-brands.

Q: Why must Symphony Core clients start from blank?
A: SC clients always have existing logos and brand identities. Starting from blank ensures we build the design kit around their established branding rather than modifying a preset template.

Q: Can I import brand assets from another design kit?
A: Currently, GoHighLevel requires manual upload of assets for each design kit. Plan to have all brand assets readily available before beginning the setup process.

Q: What happens to existing designs when I update the brand board?
A: Updates to the brand board will affect new designs created after the change. Existing designs retain their original formatting unless manually updated.

Q: How should I name colors in the design kit?
A: Use descriptive, brand-appropriate names that reflect the client's brand identity. Examples: "Symphony blue" (not "Blue"), "Core slate" (not "Gray"), "Success accent" (not "Green"). Avoid generic names like "Color 1" or numbered variants. Color names should be meaningful and help users understand when to use each color.

Q: Where should I look for client logos before uploading?
A: Always check Media Storage > Brand Assets > logos first. This helps avoid duplicate uploads and maintains consistency across the platform. If logos exist there, use those files rather than uploading new ones.
